Third World Romance: The Real Filipino Love Story

“Kahit pasukuin pa tayo ng sistema, ng buong mundo, ilalaban kita! Lalaban ako, kasama mo.”

For us Filipinos, the portrayal of romance in the media is muddled by sensationalist tropes of forbidden love due to social stature, long lost families, and endless agawans with sabunutans and sigawans to serve as the benchmark. These are a dime a dozen, but once in a while, a more mundane but genuine tale of love and survival can be found on the silver screen.

From Dwein Baltazar, the director of other known Filipino films in the indie scene such as “Oda sa Wala” and “Gusto Kita with All My Hypothalamus,” comes Third World Romance, the closing film at Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival 2023 that displayed the reality of the Philippines’ economic and political state beneath the surface of a typical romantic comedy. The film was released for streaming on Netflix last November 16, 2023.

It stars leading woman Charlie Dizon, known for her remarkable performance as the lead actress in Fangirl (2020), as a loud and blunt state university scholar undergraduate named Britney “Bree” Gatmaitan. She’s accompanied by her leading man and offscreen partner Carlo Aquino, an established longtime actor known from various romance and historical films, as an optimistic grocery bagger named Alvin “Vin” Tolentino. Together, they navigate through life as blue-collared lovers simply trying to achieve their goals of happiness even when everything comes at a price—which may be too high from their purely working class perspective.

The political undertone is established with their not-so-cute meet-cute, which is the term for a first encounter between two romantic partners in a story. At a line for essential aid, Bree urges Vin to steal the ayuda instead of waiting for another opportunity after being cut off, emphasizing that they earned the stolen share as taxpayers. The two grow closer together as Vin helps Bree earn a job at the grocery store he works at. As the bagger, Vin tends to carry Bree’s baggage in the relationship too. He does so without complaint, being compliant in all aspects of his life. On the other hand, Bree stands up for her beliefs and is not afraid to speak her mind. The two characters’ contrasting personalities were reasons to cause both harmony and contradiction in the relationship. They tell their stories in fitting settings, such as outside the typical commercial Korean Barbecue restaurants, eating only what their budget can afford as they can only fantasize about what lies behind the commonly populated establishments surrounding them.

Captured in well-thought-of cinematography paired with striking and naturally flowing dialogue, the plight of poverty is seen and tackled in the film without resorting to romanticizing it nor falling into the pit of despair as a major conflict is resolved by standing up against the grocery store’s exploitative branch supervisor. This was preceded by a climactic one-shot scene between the two leads, where internal practicality and external commitment clash. The famous two-minute scene is surely well worth the two-hour watch. Various concepts, such as “endo” and contractualization, Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs), missing overtime pays, ghost employees, double shifts, utang na loob, and the country’s state of labor in general are also incorporated into the story. Aside from Director Baltazar’s evident call to action regarding economic injustice in the Philippines, the normalization of LGBTQ+ characters was also dominant in Vin’s family composed of only queer members.

Third World Romance may showcase the real Filipino love story, but it is by no means revolutionary or a game changer. Its themes can be seen in plenty other works of art, even expounded on to a more meaningful extent, yet its novelty lies in the craftsmanship found in producing an astonishing balance between palatable kilig-worthy romantic comedy and genuine socioeconomic commentary that can reach the hearts and minds of the Filipino community without the need for the usual dramatic and unrealistic cinematics. Bree and Vin show the delicate and pure proletariat love that blossoms despite the controversy involving the necessity of financial stability in romantic relationships, always begging the question, “can you afford to love?”—since in a developing country where the ideal monetary standing still cannot be met by individuals who work their bones off day and night, a fantastical romance can still be achieved; just not thrive without the need to stand up for both one’s partner and self in a system full of injustice. That, in life, we’d be lucky to have unconditional love and support to face an unlucky world.

Teachers’ Day Program: A Breath of Fresh Air for Setonian Educators

To acknowledge the diligence and alleviate the stress of the Ĵý – South educators, allowing them a breath of fresh air and an opportunity to wind down, the Supreme Student Council (SSC) prepared and facilitated a lively, fun-filled Teachers’ Day Program that was held on October 6, 2023. All the teachers and staff from each grade level were invited. This meaningful program took place at the Bailey Hall and was hosted by Niña De Guzman and Aliyah Tamon.

The program kicked off with warm welcoming remarks from the school’s principal, Ms. Nenet Ayson, who delivered an uplifting message to all the educators while also acknowledging the efforts of the learners who contributed to the production of the program.

The first activity the Balay teams were faced with was the classic “Family Feud”, where the players raced to press the buzzer and guess the common responses to various learner-related questions. Balay Martha prevailed as the winning team for this first game.

An intermission number then preceded the second game, where Zoey Gamboa from the Grade School Student Council graced the audience with her song number. Her performance was accompanied by a slideshow prepared by the Grade School Student Council.

The second activity gave the teachers a chance to showcase their talent in singing, as the next game was entitled “Sing It If You Know It.” Balay Rachelle swept the floor with their musical talent, placing first in the game.

The program was followed by the serving of food as well as the viewing of the Audio-Visual Presentation produced by the SSC, dedicated especially to the teachers. During this time, the customized gifts sponsored by the Family Council and the SSC were also distributed to the teachers as they enjoyed their meals.

The event concluded with the awarding of certificates to the winners of the games, followed by group photos of each Balay.

In addition to this, selected learners from Grades 9-12 took charge in place of the teachers. They supervised the classes and went on with their student-teaching tasks throughout the duration of the program.

In spite of all the responsibilities the teachers uphold and the challenges they’re faced with every day, this special program was able to give them time for relaxation and reap the fruits of their hard work. The teachers were able to foster camaraderie with one another and work together to compete in multiple, lighthearted activities.

Grand Rosary Rally 2023: United in Faith and Justice

Ĵý-South (ESS-South) held its Grand Rosary Rally along with the Marian Procession on Friday, October 13, 2023, celebrating the theme: Unity of Prayer, Rosary for Equality, Peace, and Justice. This event showcased the power of prayer and the importance of working towards equality and justice during the Rosary Month.

The Marian Procession, along with the karakol, started at the Catherine Seton Square, traveled across the street of the school, and ended at the ESS-South Chapel with Grades 4 to 12 attendees.

The selected Grade School students, dressed in diverse cultural attire from around the globe in celebration of United Nations (UN) Month, led the rosary. After each mystery, selected High School students performed an interlude about inequalities and issues in the world.

Blind followers were shown in the first dance bit for The Agony of Christ in the Garden, but towards the end, someone reaches for Jesus while the song “Upuan” by Gloc-9 ft. Jeazell Grutas plays in the background.

With The Scourging at the Pillar, protestors were shown being slandered on social media for exercising basic human rights. With this, the song “Kulay Rosas” was sung by Althea Aboga from 10-Maragondon during the act—a song depicting hope for a better future.

Charlize Bautista, a student from 9-Immaculate Conception, delivered a spoken poetry piece for the third mystery. The audience heard about the issue of people struggling under leadership full of unfulfilled promises. The Crowning of Jesus with Thorns is the atonement for the sins of pride, the sin many “leaders” bear and practice, and an issue the poem tackled deeply.

The fourth mystery, The Carrying of the Cross, played the song “Balita” by Gloc-9, and a performance of farmers rallying for their land being stolen by the rich to build more buildings showcased another prevalent issue in the present.

“Gising na Kaibigan Ko” by Gloc-9 was sung by Megumiko Yamada from 5-Lam-ang for the fifth sorrowful mystery, The Crucifixion of Jesus. The song talks about opening people’s eyes to the issues of the world, being aware and making a change.

This activity, according to Sir Jaymar Morong, the Subject Area Coordinator of the Christian Catholic Formation Department, aimed for Setonians to come together as a symbol of hope and unity—bridging differences in nationalities, cultures, and backgrounds and celebrating the profound ideals of justice, equality, and freedom that unite us all as one human family.

United Nations 2023: Recognizing Essential Values For Every Human Being

The commemoration of the United Nations (UN), which was organized by the Araling Panlipunan department, showcased the theme of “Equality, Freedom, and Justice for All” for this year. This was announced on October 10, 2023, alongside a dance rendition of Tropical Depression’s “Kapayapaan” by selected high school learners. This year’s activity components are as follows: UN classroom-based activities and the UN Inter-House Debate Competition. The aim is to educate students with an in-depth knowledge of what equality and freedom genuinely convey.

The event began on October 17, 2023, with UN classroom activities. The climate action exhibit, which incorporated Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 12, was the activity for Grade 6 learners. Goal 12 of the SDG was included in a trash-formation activity for Grade 7 students, while Goal 16 of the SDG was integrated into a UN peace talk for Grade 8 students. SDG 10 was incorporated into activities for both Grades 9 and 10, with the activity for Grade 9 students being “Equality for Economic Equality” and the activity for Grade 10 students being the UN Assemblage.

Overall, one group from each section in Grades 6, 7, and 8 was picked as the winner; however, in Grades 9 and 10, only one section was the overall winner in their respective grade levels. The winner for Grade 9 is 9-Immaculate Conception, while 10-Maragondon won overall in their level.

On November 8, 2023, an Inter-House Competition for the UN Debate was organized, where representatives from different houses participated.

Sir Jhoew Medina, the Subject Area Coordinator of the Araling Panlipunan Department, stated the following about the United Nations Inter-House Debate: “In the 25 years of Ĵý – South’s existence, we are having our first-ever inter-house/inter-level debate competition. We are ready and open to discussing different types of social issues that are happening in our society. It’s about time that our voices are heard.

The competition began with the Elimination Round, where the House of St. John Paul the Second (JP2), represented by Charies Viloria, Samantha Edu, and Joaquin Dizon, went head-to-head with the House of San Lorenzo Ruiz (SLR), represented by Colleen Consorio, Athena Manalili, and Patricia Bansil. Following this, the House of San Pedro Calungsod (SPC), represented by Francheska Aguilar, Jillian Ramirez, and Geana Villanueva, took the stage to compete with the House of St. John the 23rd (J23), represented by Kale Donggon, Kalvin Asuncion, and Brent Buluran. Lastly, it was the turn of the House of St. Peter, represented by Raphael Bellas, Kirsten Virata, and Hannah Dinio, and the House of St. Paul, represented by Tracy Lola, Stephen Arroyo, and Sascha Certeza, to present their arguments. The competition was a battle of wits and intellect among these gifted individuals as they showcased their debating abilities.

After the challenging phase of the Elimination Round, the Houses of SLR, SPC, and St. Peter emerged victorious and triumphant, securing their spots in the Semi-Finals, while St. James was declared as the bye and represented by Seth Plata, Petrice Guevarra, and Claude Olegario. The said event took place on November 10, 2023, and began between the Houses of St. James and SLR. The central focus of their debate revolved around the question, Should transgender women be a part of competitions made for AFAB (Assigned Female At Birth) women?

Following this debate, the next round began with the Houses of SPC and St. Peter. Their debate revolved around the question, Is democracy better for countries?

The intense exchange of points during the Semi-Finals was an exciting and thought-provoking event that showcased the intellectual ability and fluency of the Houses of SLR, SPC, St. Peter, and St. James. Each house passionately presented their arguments and skillfully defined their points of view.

After a challenging round, during which numerous Houses competed fiercely, only two secured their positions in the anticipated Finals. These two Houses, SPC’s and SLR’s, have demonstrated their intellect and fluency. As the Finals commence, the selected topic is Is it right for families to break up over conflicting political opinions? Immediately after the final round, the top three winners were recognized. The House of St. James took third place, while the House of SPC took second. Finally, the House of SLR was awarded first place.

The Award Ceremony took place on November 14, 2023, during the Morning Assembly at the Catherine Seton Square. Sir Jhoew Medina presented the top three winners alongside the announcement of individual award recipients.

He highlighted the names of the talented contestants who stood out in the Elimination Round, which included Athena Manalili, Patricia Bansil, Geana Villanueva, Jillian Ramirez, Raphael Bellas, and Kirsten Virata. Moving on to the Semi-Finals, Sir Jhoew once again highlighted the outstanding contestants, in which Athena Manalili, Patricia Bansil, Kirsten Virata, and Francheska Aguilar were all acknowledged for their remarkable debating skills. Last but not least, Championship Round contestants Colleen Consorio and Patricia Bansil were recognized as the Best Rebuttal and Best Constructive Speech Speakers, respectively.

In addition to celebrating the candidates’ individual achievements, the celebration of United Nations Month 2023, which highlighted its accomplishments and ideals, was a great celebration of successes and an honor for all those who competed to grasp the theme for this year’s United Nations celebration.

Nurturing Young Minds: Primary Learners Shine with Multiple Intelligences

The school is taking a step forward by extending its entrepreneurial programs to the Primary learners. Recognizing that entrepreneurship knows no age, the event aims to nurture the creative and innovative minds of young children through an entrepreneurial activity called “TOTpreneurs and KIDpreneurs.”

Scheduled for various grade levels, the goal of the program is to introduce learners from Toddler to 2nd Grade to basic entrepreneurial concepts, skills, and character qualities. By engaging in thematic activities customized to their respective levels, students gained a deeper understanding of the business world while honing their creativity and problem-solving abilities.

Building Interpersonal Skills:

The program kicked off with Toddler and Nursery students last September 25, 2023, with an activity titled “A Day at the Market.” Within the school’s Multiple Intelligence Hall, a simulated market was set up, allowing young learners to experience shopping for items and goods. This hands-on approach helped the children familiarize themselves with the concept of goods, services, and markets.

Grade 1 students, last October 2, 2023, participated in “My Product Creation.” This activity encourages brainstorming sessions where students imagine and propose innovative products for kids. Through individual presentations, they showcased their product inventions.

On the same day, Grade 2 students delved into “My Kind of Store.” This activity challenges them to brainstorm an innovative store concept, considering factors such as the products or services offered, a creative store name, the target audience, and even the physical appearance of the store. To further enhance the learning experience, the students also engaged in a role-playing activity titled “A Scene at the Market.” This immersive exercise simulated various scenarios that occur in a market, allowing students to apply their knowledge and skills in a practical setting. Moreover, the activities helped the Primary learners build their interpersonal skills by engaging with their peers.

Developing Intrapersonal Skills:

In the spirit of recognizing the achievements and developmental progress of young learners, a culminating event was held for the Toddler students last October 25-27, 2023. This event aimed to showcase the skills and values acquired by the children during their early childhood education journey.

The event spanned three days, each focusing on a different aspect of the child’s development. On October 25, the teachers facilitated a skills check to assess the learners’ progress during the first term. This individual demonstration allowed the children to showcase the behavioral indicators expected at their age or grade level.

The following day, October 26, the learners had the opportunity to express themselves through self-portraits, symbolizing their unique identities and personal growth—an activity that fostered creativity and self-expression among the young learners.

Finally, on October 27, a special presentation was dedicated to the parents, highlighting the skills identified on the first day and showcasing the self-portraits created by the children. The program included a prayer, a dance performance, an audio-visual presentation of the learners’ activities in the classroom, and, most importantly, an award ceremony to recognize the learners’ character strengths.

The culminating event served as a tribute to the dedication and hard work of both the learners and their teachers. Through this, participants had the chance to develop their intrapersonal skills by acknowledging and nurturing their talents and capabilities. It provided an opportunity for parents to witness firsthand the progress their children have made and to appreciate the comprehensive approach to education.

Verbal Linguistic Intelligence

In celebration of diversity and cultural awareness, on October 27, 2023, the Preschool learners held their highly anticipated yearly event, the Greet and Treat. This year’s theme was “Hats of the World,” in alignment with United Nations Month. The event aimed to foster a sense of global unity and appreciation for different countries and cultures.

The learners embarked on a captivating tour around the campus, donning hats representing various countries from around the world. The colorful array of headwear showcasing the rich diversity of present cultures. As the young learners made their way through the school, they were met with warm greetings and sweet treats from different communities. This experience allowed the children to not only indulge in delicious treats but also learn about different languages and customs from around the globe. This activity enriched the learners’ verbal-linguistic skills by learning, understanding, and communicating through different languages.

All in all, Ĵý-South’s Primary Division has experienced multiple meaningful events throughout the past months. These events truly contributed to the holistic development of young Setonians. According to the Assistant Principal of the Primary Division, Mr. Jose Miguel Jazmines, “The various activities are good ways to bring back the life skills we want to teach the kids now that the pandemic is over. These include general skills such as taking care of one’s personal belongings, behaving in public places, and socializing with people. It also develops in them specific competencies such as using money and brainstorming entrepreneurial ideas. Thankfully, we were successful in this endeavor as indicated by the kids’ newly acquired habits and values, as well as their smiles and laughter throughout the activities. This would not have been possible without the support of our teachers and staff, parents, and Family Council officers.”

Tradisyong Walang-Maliw: KamPiSe at Palarong Pinoy 2023
