The Value Of Insignificance

“someday i want to be a superhero,

like the ones i see on tv, on the big screen,”

a young boy tells me

someone who ought to be remembered

one of the giants upon whom humanity stands on,

a strong man with great power

who’ll save everyone he can

i suppose that kind of ideal person was what he meant

“that’s where you were wrong,” i reply

thinking that power comes from sheer strength alone?

that it can manifest wholly in one individual?

i tell him, “the true heroes are the little ones

who collectively carry the weight of the world on their backs

who don no cape nor hold superhuman powers”

they’re simply clothed in the working man’s attire

you have to realize that you aren’t the big hero nor the giant

you’re simply one of the little ones and will remain to be

but it doesn’t mean that there’s no hope

power is rooted in your numbers

you, as well as all of the little ones out there

by using your collective voice to change and do what needs to be done

the people above, in time, will realize that they are nothing without us propping them up

i continue, “we are minuscule, merely a speck”

barely leaving an imprint upon the winding course of our history, our existence

because of this fact, one can feel and act without remorse

knowing that individual actions will not change the world

these words sound bleak

but still, i find solace in them

“you, young boy, have to come to terms with our insignificance as an individual

and rejoice in being part of the multitude”

The Pandemic’s Mark on Seniors: A Love Triangle

Online classes and I have this strange and complicated relationship. We still love and need each other, but there is this lingering idea that there was supposed to be something better, and now it’s gone because we took it for granted. This is about me and my love triangle with online learning and face-to-face learning, how it all started and affected us as students and especially as seniors.

In the past, we felt exhausted from a never-ending cycle: waking up early, brushing our teeth, and the occasional bath. Some of us were lucky enough to enjoy a comfortable seat with air conditioning while riding in our respective cars or services while others needed to commute just to get to school: riding buses or jeeps packed with people, making them feel exhausted as they arrived. Then came the seemingly endless activities our school would give, may it be academic or non-curricular. We would even feel uneasy when there was no homework, but even though this may sound repetitive or irritating, it still has its charms: The joy you experience when seeing your classmates, the ability to tell and rant to your friends about how hectic the Monday schedule is, the temptation to go downstairs and eat the newly cooked veggie fritters while waiting for the next teacher, or even looking outside at the window and admiring the rain as it falls wishing Gov Pogi to make his move.

Now here we are, discovering that online learning is a different beast. I find some tasks challenging to do due to poor connectivity. It’s also difficult to stare at the screen for 8 hours straight as it irritates my eyes. Even though the school is trying its best to provide activities such as Kahoot, presentations, simulations, etc. to create an interactive and knowledge-filled environment, it still isn’t able to match the thrill that normal classes give, whether it may be good or seemingly naughty. We’ve realized how face-to-face learning is still superior. This may be due to the lack of interaction that online learning provides. However, we’re uncertain when we’ll be able to experience face-to-face classes again. The quarantine protocols being implemented are always being changed twice a month, so it’s difficult to assume that it will be allowed and required again at any time.

It’s natural for us to reminisce. As an old chapter of our lives starts to slowly close, the mark will always be there as a reminder of acceptance to all the events, including our graduation, which were handicapped by the pandemic. The feeling of loss for the fact that we may have unknowingly seen our friends and classmates for the last time, and being unable to say a proper goodbye. Not all things stay the same, and the changes this pandemic caused made us realize that we need to move on and adjust. People try to go on with their lives despite the situation, so let’s do the same in every way possible, as there might be something better to look forward to.

The COVID-19 pandemic has been around for quite a while now, and everyone has a lot of spare time inside their homes. Most of us don’t know what to do to keep ourselves entertained and productive. Here are things some of our members did to keep them entertained during the lockdowns:

Hannah Sacil:

While the virus was spreading across the globe and a lot of people got infected every day, I was left thinking to myself: “How do I manage this lockdown? How can I keep my mind and body busy and unfocused on the threat posed by COVID-19?”

I thought of different ways to be productive during quarantine, and thankfully, my swimming coaches helped me maintain a healthy mind and body through daily workouts. Thanks to technology, exercises and counseling became a habit that has kept me strong not only physically but also mentally. I realized that getting into the so-called “new normal” is not so difficult if you are surrounded by people who share the same passion as you have. As an athlete, I was able to find alternative ways to keep in shape and still be connected to my sport despite doing so through the virtual world.

Joaquin Dizon:

To keep myself sane and busy during the pandemic, my coping strategy was playing online games. As a developing teen, it had a huge impact on me. It gave me a competitive spirit to be on top of the other players in the game. It also allowed me to interact with others while learning their techniques and other mechanics. I also started binge-watching on Netflix, a platform that provides movies.

Transitioning from grade school to junior high school was a huge adjustment for me. Therefore, I studied a little to improve my grades and keep my mind sharp before the school year started. I started to practice effective note-taking skills and experimented with new ways of studying. Note-taking is important in order for me to remember the details of each lesson. Experimenting with new ways to study is also essential to adapt to changes in this new normal. I also utilized self-reflection to keep my mind in shape through contemplating my accomplishments and areas of improvement.

As I hope that this pandemic will soon end, I continue to walk on this path and do my best to live and adapt with the changes. I look forward to every new day with the belief that humanity will soon overcome these trying times.

Jayvielynn Santos:

“How do you keep yourself company throughout the pandemic without ever getting bored?” Well, let me tell you my story about how I managed to free myself from the chains of laziness and disinterest.

Honestly, the first two weeks were awesome! There was nothing to do, so I stayed up late because I had nothing to worry about. As more weeks passed by, I felt a longing for school, friends, and activities we used to do before. To keep my mind occupied, I decided to think of some activities I can do to maximize my time and energy while being productive at the same time. I tried sketching some artworks again because I stopped doing it before due to the lack of time. I started with a portrait of an American star I admire, followed by sketching Mobile Legends Heroes. Speaking of mobile games, playing Mobile Legends and Wild Rift helped me pass time. In addition to this, I decided to read books and write songs, novels, and poems because there’s something about writing and narrating a story that always makes me happy and calm. Trying different activities was very exciting as well like organizing my bookshelf, cooking, and creating digital art.

In this pandemic, everything seems hopeless and boring, but if we look closer, this may be a chance to discover ourselves more. Bond with your family and learn new things. If I can do it, so can you! Just remember to see the silver lining, and everything will turn out fine in the end.

Cedd Llanes:

One way I made this quarantine entertaining yet productive is by using my spare time to learn to make simple dishes and different cooking techniques. Because of technology, I can search for any dish that I want to make and find hundreds of tutorial videos about it. My father is the one who cooks most of the time for our family, so I asked him for tips and lessons in cooking. Of course, I started with simple dishes like fried foods and easy-to-cook delicacies. As time passes, I plan to move on to complex but tastier dishes. For me, cooking and eating are great ways to cope with the stress and anxiety that online classes and the pandemic inflict upon me. Cooking lessons with my father also served as a way for us to bond and grow our relationship. Another benefit of practicing cooking is adjusting my diet and eating plan into something well-balanced and healthy. We all are hoping for this pandemic to end soon, but why not learn something new while we wait? I’m sure practicing cooking will pass a lot of my time while also filling up my stomach. Bon Appetit!

Solitude is Bliss

Men, in essence, are social beings. From proven statements from biology, neuroscience, psychology, and more, it is a fact that we’re better when we’re not alone. Yet the unprecedented pandemic, along with the government’s efforts to control the disease — quarantine, social distancing, and isolation — has holistically disrupted our quality of life, especially our social well-being. As the strain to cope in the unfamiliar setting of social isolation is still ongoing, being alone during these trying times is anticipated, yet often unlooked, for it’s nearly impossible not to feel lonely.

According to Mary Sarton, a Belgian-American poet, “Loneliness is the poverty of self; solitude is the richness of self” and I couldn’t agree more. Loneliness is a state of depreciation, characterized by the feeling of alienation and emptiness. On the contrary, solitude is a state of appreciation, portrayed by the endearment of one’s own company. From the outside, both solitude and loneliness look identical; however, the resemblance ends at the surface. Where solitude repairs the mind and body, loneliness deposes them.

Over the course of lockdowns, I have experienced both, yet more so in loneliness.  While I countlessly stayed inside my room with myself, moldering with my thoughts of self-doubts, the heavy urge to please the opinions and judgments of others consumed my head. My chase for acceptance was nonstop as there was a constant feeling of being watched. The discomfort worsened as I fought my battles alone. Unknowingly, I spiraled through the deep and pervasive loneliness. I became emotionally and mentally exhausted; I knew I was losing myself. As I was sleepwalking towards the edge of my precipice, reality hit me. I soon realized it is all in the mental perception of the present matter because being alone is not black and white. Now I know that having time for myself is a privilege I took for granted.

It is often overlooked, as taking time for yourself is recurrently viewed as selfish and unproductive, yet it is the opposite in my book. I have learned the beauty of solitude; its independence is its essence of sophistication. Solitude heightened my self-awareness. Being alone is a chance to pause and reflect on me: to hear how I sound, see how I look, feel what I want, and smell the flowers along the way. It is a chance to take a break from seeing myself through the eyes of others and learning how I feel on the inside. I could cry or panic — scream if I wanted to. From there, I could just be me, finally having my peace of mind. With subtleness, solitude’s influence has a profound impact on how I see and treat myself for the better. It is the revelation of my authenticity’s core — by knowing who I am and being comfortable with my own skin.

Ultimately, my cultivated personal growth thrives as I encourage myself to create value through scarcity by unraveling the wonders within the grace of solitude. How about you? What’s your personal growth story in the lockdown period?

How to Cope with Burnout in the Pandemic

How can we cope with the hardships forced onto us by the “new normal” that 2020 offers? Prioritizing our health means staying inside the solitude of our homes, which is crucial in staying safe. Working from home is now common, if not necessary, and so is attaining an education from behind a screen. As students, we carry the burnout resulting from the devastating workload. It is important that we effectively deal with the stress brought upon by huge responsibilities, which is why we want to share knowledge about coping with the daily functions of a hectic student life.

These suggestions are to ensure that we finish important tasks and grasp the ideas our teachers want us to understand.

  • Avoid Distractions

Distractions like mobile games and social media result in negligence which often causes cramming that leads to exhaustion. It is important to have control when we use our devices. Place gadgets far away from the workplace and turn off notifications. Better yet, delete applications and remove objects that could interfere with your work to establish a productive work atmosphere. Sometimes, a disorganized environment keeps us distracted — a chaotic household leads to a chaotic mind, so we must maintain cleanliness.

  • Maintain a routine

Maintaining a routine could help finish tasks efficiently because of time management. Yes, maintaining a long-term routine could feel like every day is predetermined, but if done correctly by properly managing things, then there would be no problem in keeping in mind the continuous flow of activities that need to be done regularly.

  • Get a hobby

Okay, we agree that this point seems contradictory to the previous one, but it could also be quite tiresome to be doing the same things every day with no outlet to keep you from spiraling into depletion. Simply having something to cool off to help you keep your mind away from the burnout of not only the school work but also the pandemic, is a healthy way to cope with the stresses of daily life. It is also good to bear in mind that a healthy body means a positive mind. We believe that applying a fitness routine now is more important because of the benefits that also contribute to our mental well-being.

  • Talk to your friends

Communication is a valuable asset to maintain good mental health and strong relationships. Without communication, people would feel isolated and alone, which is far worse now given that we have to be physically separated. One should prioritize making time to talk with friends or family because talking to those who surround you and care for you helps avoid the “falling out” of relationships, enabling you to properly handle emotions.

Ironically, the moment we crave contact most, it is what we’re restricted from. We only have each other, so from two students to another, we understand. We hope that this article could be a stepping stone in leading into easier working conditions.

3 Ways to Maintain Integrity in the E-Classroom /3-ways-to-maintain-integrity-in-the-e-classroom/ Wed, 05 May 2021 09:00:00 +0000 /?p=4361

3 Ways to Maintain Integrity in the E-Classroom

Facebook

This year arrived with many new challenges. With a pandemic wreaking havoc and other natural and economic fall-outs, this A.Y. 2020-2021 faces the struggle of achieving quality education while ensuring students’ safety. In light of this, ĚÇĐÄ´«Ă˝ decided to hold classes through online means. This way, students can continue education while staying safe from the perils of the virus.

However, transitioning from a physical set-up to online schooling means we have to face other obstacles. From adjusting to our new way of learning to dealing with the stress it brings, ensuring integrity in the e-classroom is one of the toughest challenges. How do we face this critical issue? There are many ways to do so, but as students, here are 3 ways to keep our integrity intact:

  • Maintain honesty in class, with others and ourselves

Even though we are far away from one another, being honest still holds great importance. Dishonesty is one of the main reasons for various problems in the world, and being dishonest about small things can still leave great repercussions. As young as we are, we need to cultivate our honesty. Lying to others by cheating on tests, or fabricating results helps no one especially ourselves. Honesty isn’t just the best policy because it keeps our integrity intact; in fact, it can save lives knowing that valid and truthful information is extremely important.

  • Be respectful to teachers and classmates

Respect leads us to act with integrity. Without it, we cannot act with true kindness and fairness. Having respect is the foundation that leads us to treat others with open minds and hearts, and with consideration for their humanity. It leads us to be honest and treat them with dignity, keeping our integrity intact.

  • Conduct regular self-assessments

Every day as we continue in online classes, we must frankly assess ourselves. Are we being honest? Are we treating others with dignity and respect? We all make mistakes and slip-ups. Honestly admit it, and remember that learning and making up for it is what truly matters. We must be honest and be willing to improve for the better to hold true to our dignity because it always starts within ourselves.

Martin Luther King Jr. says, “The time is always right to do what is right.” Every waking moment is an opportunity to improve and strive to do what is honorable. In the path towards the greater good, keeping our integrity intact isn’t just for our benefit. It is a collective effort from within ourselves and the people we love and trust. In these times when most things seem uncertain, our integrity keeps us whole and serves as our guide as we strive forward to a better future.

Education during the New Normal: The Art of Letting Go

Facebook
Twitter

From previously waking up during the wee hours of the morning, bodies protesting to fall into any further slumber before opening the classroom door and seeing equally drowsy classmates in person, to sneaking in much more sleep than ever before logging into Zoom. From previously passing notes and chatting with seatmates, to exchanging digital messages on various social applications with friends during class. From previously having to abstain from playing mobile games and checking news feeds due to school responsibilities, to staring at screens 24/7 for the same reasons. The pandemic caught us all off guard, deciding to unsettle our whole lives without permission nor warning, and students know these major changes all too well by now.

Due to the COVID-19 outbreak, a lockdown has been mandated since March of 2020, alongside other new rules and regulations. A domino effect of changes to our daily life has been made, toppling over the educational aspect of students’ lives along with it. Days seem a little bit tougher and nights endless as most students struggle with the imposition of a merged home and school life. Resources and living situations are not equal, group works arouse even more lack of cooperation and urgency, and the lack of satisfaction from finishing piles of work is evident due to the digital setting.

Despite everything, these are the inevitable adjustments we must come to face — the new normal. Some may never get used to it whilst others may not have as many issues in tackling and adapting to the new set-up. Still, online classes are better than having none at all since we have no knowledge regarding the absolute length of the effects caused by this pandemic. While the cons may arguably outweigh the pros, there is a constant takeaway from any situation that presents itself: there’s a lot to learn and improve ourselves upon.

It’s easy to cling onto memories of our previously normal life, for they are past experiences with a start and a finish: controlled and immutable. Finding sanctity in what has come to pass rules out any uncertainty, making reliving past moments to be much more comforting compared to living in the present moment and facing problems we’ve yet to find a solution for. It’s very easy to lose grasp on one’s self and take solace in the past rather than steady our feet in the present, but it’s important to note that no one is alone nor confident in facing the great uncertainty during these times. Though there may not be a solid countdown towards the light of the post-pandemic era, each passing day is constantly one day closer to smiling with our friends once again with no barriers needed — the thought set in stone that will make us look forward rather than back; the thought to truly take comfort in.
